Unisphere- one of the world's largest NZEB
|
The Unisphere is one of the world’s largest net-zero commercial buildings, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, Washington DC. The 135,000 sft. commercial building surmounts the challenges of achieving NZE starting with a mindset shift towards deciding to build only that much which can be supported by on-site renewable energy. This shift drove every single decision thereafter to achieve a cutting edge NZEB. For example, its openable windows automatically change tints depending on weather conditions. Moreover, air circulates through a quarter mile-long concrete labyrinth 12 feet underneath the building, providing passive heating and cooling—the labyrinth tends to be cooler than the outdoor air in the summer and warmer in the winter. The spaces are optimized for natural daylight, with daylight controls integrated into the artificial lighting systems. The building meets its energy requirements through 3000 rooftop solar panels.
