NZEB | Definitions and Policies

There are varying definitions of net-zero energy buildings as well as metrics for measuring their performance. This section defines the boundaries and metrics accepted globally. Definitions of NZEB are critical in determining the path to zero energy goals, and significantly influence design choices of architects and building owners. Appropriateness of definitions to a project vary according to project goals and values of the designer and building owner, making it essential for them to understand which definition will suit their purpose best.

Cohesive public policies are reliable instruments for sustaining course correction of building industry towards reduced energy use. Synopsis of international NZEB policies and roadmaps presented in this section will concentrate on targets, implementation timeframe and incentives that enabled them to achieve the desired milestones. Lessons imbibed from their performance will help to inform Indian policymakers about possible features of NZEB policy for India.
