Centre for Science and Environment advocates incentive mechanism for greener coal-based power plants
Center for Science and Environment has called for creating mechanism to incentivize coal based power plants which are complying to the pollution norms and penalizing those which do not comply to the same. The Organisation has conceptualized a plan name First Run which promotes and incentivizes greener power stations to run on priority, which would in turn encourage other coal based power plants to take measures to comply to local pollution norms. EECA, NZ concerned over water heaters failing energy efficiency Check-Testing
Energy Efficiency and Confederation Authority (EECA), New Zealand is disappointed and concerned over many hot water cylinders failing the energy efficiency check testing and not meeting the manufacturer’s energy efficiency claims. Around 60,000 hot water cylinders are sold per annum. “This issue is important because hot water makes up about 30% amount of the average energy bill – about $600 a year. Failure to meet Standards is costing each household up to $1,240 over the life of the cylinder (about 20 years) at current energy prices” Read more
UN says Mandatory Building Energy Code necessary by 2030
UNEP and IEA have stated that the building sector in India are likely not to meet the target as per Paris Agreement 2015 nor UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).Globally, the building sector’s energy demand and green house gas emissions rose by 7% since 2010. De-carbonization of building sector calls for efficient regulatory tool and driving force to increase the energy performance of building which can only be achieved by mandating building energy efficiency codes. India Energy Residential Survey (IRES) states 88% LED bulb penetration in India
India Energy Residential Survey (IRES) is a study conducted by Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP) which surveyed 15000 households across 21 states. Affordable government schemes for LED led to the 88% led bulb penetration and energy efficiency in Indian households, however 25% of the households knew about Star Labeling scheme of Bureau of Energy Efficiency. India to replace 373 gigawatts (GW) of coal based power plants by Renewables
Mr R K Singh, Power Minister announced that all the coal based power plants which are retiring are going to be replaced by renewable sources based power plants. India is world’s second largest coal consumer after China and coal based power plants account to 373 GW of power generating capacity. India is aiming for 175 GW of installed renewable-based power capacity by 2022. Read more
University of Cambridge aims for net zero emissions by 2038
The Cambridge University Endowment Fund (CUEF) plans to withdraw investments with conventional energy-focused public equity managers by December 2020, before building up significant investments in renewable energy by 2025. It will then move to divest from all meaningful exposure in fossil fuels by 2030, on its way to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire investment portfolio by 2038, in line with the university’s broader targets.
