SUMMARY:Sustainable Building Design: Improving the Global Footprint
DESCRIPTION:Learning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the reasons behind the design decisions for the presented projects.\nIdentify the key sustainable elements in each of the projects.\nList two design constraints to sustainability in the projects.\nDiscuss the sustainable building strategies used in these projects.\n\nThis webinar is part of the Sustainability Academy. \nJoin this Sustainability Academy webinar highlighting projects that exemplify sustainable design in action. Architects\, as leaders in the movement to promote awareness of the environmental impact of buildings\, are the standard-bearers for new innovations in design and engineering. Learn how these projects are improving the sustainable footprint of the global built environment. \nRives Taylor\, principal with Gensler’s Houston office and the firm’s sustainability leader\, will discuss the new Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) headquarters\, which recently received LEED Platinum certification. With a goal of preserving as much of the original site as possible\, designers used natural elements and reclaimed building materials to reduce the new building’s environmental impact. In addition\, a smart building envelope design and on-site solar and geothermal energy generation meet all of the building’s heating\, cooling\, and electricity needs. This webinar will also demonstrate the interactive story map\, created to allow anyone to view the entire planning\, design\, and construction processes. \nSean McGreal\, principal with ZGF\, will present the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Headquarters\, Phase 1 and 2 in Agoura Hills\, California. The LEED Platinum Phase 1 building is designed with sustainable features\, including a green roof\, solar energy panels\, passive heating and ventilation systems\, a stormwater collection system\, and is net-zero energy ready. Currently in design\, Phase 2 builds in key learnings from Phase 1 and reflects the evolving environmental goals of the foundation. Together\, these projects reflect the foundation’s primary objectives of providing innovative solutions to maximize energy efficiency and environmental protection\, including setting a regional precedent for environmental stewardship.

SUMMARY:Net Zero Guidance on Renewables and Offsets
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will give an overview of UKGBC’s Renewable Energy Procurement and Carbon Offsetting Guidance. Given the complexity of these topics\, this workshop will aim to provide a greater understanding of the principles and metrics behind them\, and what it means to procure renewable energy and carbon offset in a way that will have the most impact in terms of sustainability. \nHearing from UKGBC topic expert Emily Huynh and featured organisations spanning the built environment value chain\, we will be exploring the following questions: \n\nWhat is renewable energy procurement and what are the principles for best practice?\nWhat is carbon offsetting and how can the environmental integrity be assured?\nHow are organisations procuring high quality renewable energy and utilising carbon offsetting for their buildings or organisational strategies?\nWhat are the key actions needed by the industry over the next decade?\n\nThere will be a practical workshop session to understand how the learnings can be applied to your building or organisational strategy.

SUMMARY:NZEB Knowledge Series: Future of Carbon Neutral Design
DESCRIPTION:Buildings are connected resources of a larger built environment. Buildings lock in substantial carbon emissions through material choices and continue to emit carbon during their operations through life. Building design decisions made now will be responsible for carbon emissions for the next several decades. This presentation will provide an overview of the future of carbon neutral design. Ideas & strategies to enable a shift from energy efficiency to sophisticated ways to think holistically on a regional scale will be presented. \nAbout the speaker:  Shruti Kasarekar is an award-winning sustainability consultant with 15 years of experience in advancing sustainability within the built environment. She has led multiple highly ambitious and complex projects – from laboratories\, museums to master plans. Her work on sustainability in the built environment has been presented at several leading industry conferences. Shruti combines technical competency and creativity across multiple disciplines – architecture\, engineering and master planning and has deep expertise in passive systems\, energy optimization\, and carbon management. \nThis webinar is part of ‘NZEB Knowledge Series’ – an initiative supported by USAID’s MAITREE program (http://maitree.edsglobal.com) to accelerate the discussions and catalyse actions on Net Zero Energy Buildings in India.
