SUMMARY:Urban ARC 2021 | Urban Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:The fifth edition of Urban ARC\, the Annual Research Conference of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements\, will be conducted between the 14 – 16 January 2021. The theme for this edition is ‘Urban Imaginaries: Past\, Present and Future’. The idea of imaginaries holds a pivotal place in inquiry. Central to the very nature of knowledge production is the imagination of a better world. It is in keeping with this centrality of imaginations that Urban ARC 2021 invites papers and panels from a wide range of disciplinary spaces\, situated in theoretical\, methodological or practice-based approaches to the urban. \nThe conference aims to provide a critical and fruitful space for engagement across themes\, sectors\, methodologies and disciplines in order to enable an understanding and harness the potential of Urban Imaginaries. The conference will also host a special track focusing on post-COVID urban futures. \nDates and Procedures: \n\n\n\n23 November 2020\nDeadline for Submitting Abstracts\n\n\n4 December 2020\nAnnouncement of Selected Papers\n\n\n5 January 2021\nSubmission of Completed Papers\n\n\n14 – 16 January 2021\nUrban ARC 2021

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW)
DESCRIPTION:Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is a global platform for accelerating the world’s sustainable development. The week brings together a unique fusion of policy makers\, industry specialists\, technology pioneers and the next generation of sustainability leaders. Through its initiatives and events\, ADSW is a catalyst for sharing knowledge\, implementing strategies and delivering solutions to drive human progress. ADSW is committed to furthering our understanding of the major social\, economic and environmental trends shaping the world’s sustainable development. \nIn response to the changing global landscape\, ADSW is taking a holistic approach to sustainability to align more closely with the UAE Vision 2021 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The pillars of ADSW address Energy and Climate Change\, Water and Food\, Future of Mobility\, Space\, Biotechnology in Health\, Tech for Good. Cutting across ADSW programmes and pillars include Artificial Intelligence\, Youth and Community.

SUMMARY:Three day workshop @MIT: Model Cities Anywhere – Pathways towards a Net Zero Urban Building Stock
DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Design Lab at MIT has developed an new web app called UBEM.io to streamline the creation and analysis of urban building energy models (UBEMs). The resulting urban models can be directly used within MIT’s Urban Modeling Interface (UMI) to calculate operational building energy use along with savings from various retrofitting upgrades for hundreds or thousands of new or existing buildings. During this free\, three day workshop we are looking for teams who want to develop a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction plan for their jurisdiction. \nWhen & Where? \nThe workshop will be taught remotely. Formal instructions will last from 10am-3pm EST every day from January 19th to 21st 2021. During the workshop\, external groups of two will be teamed up with two MIT students to set up a prototype UBEM of parts of their city. The expectation is that external groups will continue working with the city following the workshop and ultimately share their findings with the instructors. \nEligibility Requirements \no    Participants must demonstrate that they have existing\, strong relationships with a municipal government agency responsible for implementing a GHG emission reduction plan. To demonstrate actual interest\, a city representative is expected to participate during the first hour of the workshop for an overview (Jan 19 10am ET) as well as during the final presentation of preliminary results on Jan 21 at 1pm ET. \no    At least one member of the team should have experience using building energy modeling software and be committed to continue working with the city on the UBEM past the three day workshop. \no    Data requirements: A recent GIS shapefile and tax assessor data or other databases describing building heights (or stories) and program must be available to the team before the workshop. \no    Software requirements: To initially generate our UBEMs\, we will be using MIT’s new UBEM.io web app. For the actual energy simulations we will be using the Urban modeling Interface\, a plug-in for Rhinoceros 3D (Rhino). Participants will need access to a newish Windows computer with Rhino on it. \nRegistration \nTo register your interest in the workshop\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:ETEnergyworld Smart Electricity Conclave
DESCRIPTION:Digitalisation has fast permeated into the energy utilities too. Power plants\, grid operators and electricity suppliers are adopting tools of the digital age to generate greater efficiencies across their operational business units\, significantly improve customer experience\, and accelerate innovation to stay ahead in rapidly changing markets. The Covid-19 pandemic has further hastened this trend as utilities look for newer ways to optimize delivery. \nThe ETEnergyworld Smart Electricity Conclave aims at providing a platform for digitalisation experts from around the globe to share best practices\, chalk out a digital roadmap and act as a bridge between the industry and decision-makers for the success of Industry.

SUMMARY:EDGE Discovery Workshop: Practical Steps to Zero Carbon Buildings – Online – Global
DESCRIPTION:IFC is hosting a free workshop on Thursday\, January 21 to learn practical steps for designing zero carbon buildings using EDGE: a fast\, easy\, and more affordable way to build and brand green. \nThe workshop will focus on concrete actions that developers\, investors\, building owners\, and policy makers can take to design\, build\, and operate carbon neutral buildings. Climate science informs that all new buildings need to be zero carbon by 2030\, while existing buildings will need to be retrofitted to be zero carbon by 2050.

SUMMARY:GETTING TO ZERO: CARBON NEUTRAL CODES
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, U.S. building energy codes have centered on kilowatt-hour savings in buildings. But urgency on climate change is pressing us to rapidly address and mitigate carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment\, which is responsible for 39% of operational and embodied carbon. Join us for a one-hour webinar on the opportunities for states and cities to leverage their energy codes in order to maximize carbon reductions and minimize costs including a broad overview of best practice strategies and approach in action. NBI staff will introduce new “decarbonization code language” that it is compatible with the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and can be adopted as an overlay option. The code language and supporting guidance\, which will help adopting agencies move to carbon neutral requirements in newly constructed homes and commercial buildings\, prioritizes efficient electric equipment and is designed so that it can be implemented to meet jurisdictions where they are.
